17 December 1979
The need for an Italian recreational centre had been evident for some time and at a General Meeting of prospective members, held in the Marayong Community Hall, the name Centro Sociale Italiano was chosen, and a foundational membership fee was fixed at $250. Members were elected to form a provisional Committee, Board of Directors, and sub-committees that supported the Club including Ladies Bocce Sub Committee, Men’s Bocce Sub Committee, Soccer Sub Committee and Younger Set Sub Committee.
Construction began on the Clubhouse thanks to the generosity of certain Members and their companies:
-Torresan Engineering provided the steel and assisted with the fabrication of the framework
-Transfield donated the purlins for the roof
-John Carr of J. Carr Insulations provided the roofing
-Rossi and G. Pellizzon provided the formwork for the suspended concrete floor
-Agazio Fragomeli provided the concrete pumper.
-30,000 bricks were laid by Members donating their time and labour.
8 September 1982
An amendment was made to the Articles of Association to create a new category of Member called ‘Patrons of the Club’, allowing the issue of Honorary Life Membership to people who gave outstanding service to the Club. The assembled Members voted unanimously to honour Tino Torresan, C. Salteri and John Carr.
The legacy continued, carried on by the children of the founding members as well as new members to the community. Directors proudly work towards ensuring the Club’s longevity so the next Australian-born Italian generations can continue to learn about their heritage, and play an active role in helping the Italian culture thrive.
